Our Earth, Our Home

Balance... that is the ultimate goal. Now days there is no doubt that in the back of our mind we believe humankind can have ultimate control over nature and the Earth. On the other hand, most people believe the Earth so big that we cannot have any lasting impact on the environment. But back to the analogy of the butterfly, each small action, one simple beat of wings, can bring about a chain reaction or combination of events which can ultimately lead to something huge. Whether that is for the good or bad, saving the Earth or harming it until it is inhabitable, that depends on the direction of the initial action. The Earth's Circumference at the Equator is 24,901.55 miles (40,075.16 km), the surface area is 510 million square kilometer, 30% of which is land and 70% water. From May 2010 there was a recorded 6,820,000,000 (6.82 billion) people living on Earth increasing 1.13% each year until by 2062, the population will have doubled in size. Do you still think together we would not have the power to harm the earth? We can be Earths parasites, or we can be Earths keepers. The atmosphere is only thin, in comparison it is the thickness of varnish on a table, thin enough for us as 6.82 billion people to change its composition, and change it we are.

The Green house effect is only one area of concern to the environment, but has the power to alter our environment and climate in a way that can produce devastating effects such as Hurricanes, floods, droughts and fires. Basically the suns radiation comes into the Earths atmosphere and is partly absorbed to heat up the Earth. Some is reflected back into space in the form of infrared radiation, but some of the outgoing infrared is trapped in the Earths atmosphere which enables the temperature on Earth to be within certain habitable temperatures and composition. The problem is we are thickening this layer of atmosphere with pollution and gases such as carbon dioxide, ozone, methane and human made hydro-fluorocarbons and sulfur hexafluoride.

The composition of air at 15 degrees celcius and 101325 Pascals is 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen and 0.9% argon which leaves 0.03% of the air for greenhouse gasses such as CO2 which is increasing at 1 part per million per year. This may seem so little, but just think of the vast area of the earths atmosphere, this 'little' amount increasing can and is causing many devastating affects. Studies linked with the intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) have found that the Earths global temperature has risen by 0.56-0.92 degrees Celsius during the past 100 years and is set to rise by 6.2 degrees by 2100. As a result, the climate in the Earths atmosphere is changing to adapt to the increased heat and we are facing devastating results.

Those people living ear the ocean floor will suffer droughts, floods and poverty as sea levels rise and intense weather will bring about more intense hurricanes, tornados, tsunamis, thunderstorms, blizzards and more. Agriculture yields will change, glaciers are retreating, more species will become extinct and over time the effects will become more pronounced. It is still uncertain to the severity of these events and when they will occur but most believe that there is a high chance of at least one of the above events will occur as climate change becomes more apparent.

It is true that warming periods and ice ages come and go, best of all in warming periods species have flourished and not become extinct and so warming would be welcomed as ice ages cause more species to become extinct. However these periods of warming and cooling are natural and in the past have occurred without the presence of the pollutions in the atmosphere which we are continuously creating today. And so while global warming alarmists are pushing agendas and protocols to which many may regard as misleading and over the top i'd like you to keep in mind that the rise in the pollutions we are creating can have unpredictable effects but can have devastating effects and it is better to be safe than sorry. As an example, with the rise in the amounts of preservative and artificial colorings and flavorings in foods just look at the increase in cancer rates are diseases we are facing as we are polluting our bodies. Whats more, who is to say that saving our water and using renewable forms of energy is a bad thing??? These agendas and actions we are taking will help to clean our air, clean our water and lower costs of living as well as saving the environment from being cut, washed away, used up and destroyed.

Picture yourself far away from where you are now, in a forest, in a valley, on as island, a place where there is only you, free from any civilization and simply surrounded by nature. Listen to the wind gently rustling the leaves, hear the birds chirping in the distance, water near by running in a stream and feel how free we can be with nature around us as you lay in the grass with the sun in your face.... now be startled by the sound of a car horn, engines rumbling, fumes filling your senses and see the cloud of fog surrounding where you live. How can we live in a snow globe of consumerism, pollution and destruction? What's more how can the Earth?
